Mature students are familiar
and welcome members of the university classroom. They typically have several years of work experience and often have
previous postsecondary education. Mature students are usually highly motivated but are often concerned that their
learning skills are out of practice or even outmoded. Since their life experiences have provided an education in themselves,
these students often need direction focusing skills they already possess. Self-confidence and comfort in
the university setting are often the major hurdles mature students must overcome in their first year. Even students who might
have struggled at the secondary level often find that they "hit their stride" when they enter university. Challenging
themselves and questioning the methods, evidence and theory presented in their readings and discussions may stimulate
a sense of excitement that surprises them. Rules of Engagement respects all of its clients and treats them as colleagues
in scholarly activities. Mature students will have help in identifying their strengths and in developing their abilities.
Rather than feeling out of place, these students will start their university careers with the self-confidence they have earned
for themselves. |
